Self Portrait

I decided to make a self portrait using my graphics tablet and Adobe Illustrator. I wanted to get more practice with digital drawing. However, I wanted to make the portrait a bit more personal and funky. In class were told to look at how we view ourselves and what we want to be reflected.

I have always viewed myself as this awkward geek girl. I’ve always loved fantasy, sci-fi, video games and graphic novels. I wanted to show this in my self portrait. I already drew myself as an elf, so I wanted to make this creation a bit different. I decided it would be really neat to make my skin look like outer space. Besides looking cool, this galaxy-skin-idea also took care of tedious highlights and shadows that come with pictures of people. And I assumed I would only be appropriating science and offending martians. And MAYBE James Cameron’s Avatar people.

Once I had the picture of myself done I went onto UpSplash to find a royalty-free image. I found this gorgeous picture of a starry sky and applied it to the portrait.

I am pretty happy with the final product. I guess you could say it looks out-of-this-world. HAHAHA…I figured I could get away with that pun since it’s the end of the semester.
